Lumbar Multifidus

Lumbar Multifidus

The Lumbar Multifidus (multifidus spinae : pl. multifidi ) muscle consists of a number of fleshy and tendinous fasciculi, which fill up the groove on either side of the spinous processes of the vertebrae, from the sacrum to the axis. The multifidus is a very thin muscle.

Deep within the spine, it extends along three joint segments of the vertebrate, and acts with stabilizing the joints in each segment level.

Lumbar Multifidus is a very thin rigid muscle

The rigidness and stability acts to make each vertebra function effectively, and lessens the degeneration of the joints.

Functional core training will always strengthen this important muscle of the deep core muscles.

Core training for the Lumbar Multifidus

The Lumbar Multifidus can benfit greatly from core training, as this muscle group is responsible for spinal stability as well as pelvic stability. A strong Lumbar Multifidus is important because it will help reduce the chance of spinal injury as well as maintain a strong foundation for when we age. Core training such as stability exercises have been shown to target the Lumbar Multifidus extremely well giving it remarkable strength and stability.
